Program

Adam Wright is a designer and sales coordinator with Beyond Today, a new sustainable living development at Hayborough between Victor Harbor and Port Elliott. Adam will speak about the aims, philosophy, design guidelines and current status of this imaginative project. He will also give an overview of his personal approach to sustainable living.

Judy Celmins will outline an exciting new website ‘Shmeco’ developed by herself and Pia Vogrin. It’s dedicated to promoting sustainable living through sharing ideas and interactivity and will soon be launched throughout Australia. Judy and Pia are also the national organisers of Sustainable House Day.

There’s also a segment called Who Can Help Me which is a chance to pose questions such as: Where can I buy it? How do I do it? Does anybody know about…?
Now we have more time available, if you have anything of interest to show and tell or an event to report during this segment, bring it along.

Forthcoming meetings

Sept 8th: Steve Poole: Eco Villages. Steve is an eco-village consultant who has been involved with several projects including Aldinga Arts Eco Village and has given many presentations on the topic. What they are, the aims and philosophy, how they begin and develop – plus a few trials and tribulations.

Oct 13th: Designers Forum (changed from Sept 8th) A panel of house designers and energy ratings auditors will answer questions from the floor. This is designed as a follow-on from Sustainable House Day and will give an opportunity to explore some design concepts in more detail that is possible during house tours. This forum will start at 6-30 pm and not 7-30 pm as our regular meetings.

Other events and news

  • Sustainable House Day is coming soon on Sept 13th, 10-00 to 4-00 pm. There are 10 houses open around Adelaide and we need just a few more volunteers. Homes are open in Darlington, Daw Park, Hawthorndene, Glenalta, Kuitpo, Fitzroy, Adelaide, Henley, Payneham and Unley. We need just a few more volunteers who will greet visitors and organise groups ready for tours.

They can explain some features of the house if they are confident but there’s no expectation – it’s easy and enjoyable. House entry is now free so no money handling is involved which means less work for volunteers. However because of this we expect numbers to be up. We’re aiming to have volunteers doing rosters of just half a day to allow them to visit other homes. Please email me at alanmarg@cobweb.com.au if you can assist.

  • Starting on ABC 1 is a new series on Thursdays at 6.05pm entitled The World’s Greenest Homes which may include some good ideas.
  • The Federal Government is considering a rating system for power consumption or computers and monitors and these could be labelled by the end of next year. Other products being considered include faxes, printers and standby power devices.
