Cairns May Newsletter

Hi everyone,
Sorry this is late, but once again, it snuck up on me. Our last meeting was a well worthwhile trip to see Ian’s Aquaponics setup. What a great afternoon and thanks once again to Ian for his hospitality. His brief on the pleasures and pitfalls of Aquaponics was well received by all and I was very surprised by some of the issues that were raised. For instance, I’d never considered that the fish in the equation weren’t of very much economic significance, but were actually the “engine” that drove the whole system.
Also, I was quite amazed at the produce output for the fish food input (per Kilogram). I know from my pond at home that the plants in the water grow much better than the plants in the garden but now, I am taking a new look at my setup to see what I can do on a small scale.

The Tropical Green Building Network is going strong and is travelling along the same lines as the ATA, but aimed at Tropical Builders and Businesses. I find it fascinating to see the enthusiasm that is building up in Cairns and it is proving to be a great place to meet builders, engineers and suppliers with similar interests to mine. If you are at all interested in the future of housing in the Tropical North or are thinking of building your own place, you should come along to the meetings, held on the first Wednesday of every month at the Cairns City Library between 5:30 pm and 7: 30pm. Also, check out the www.greenbuild.com.au and www.nqbuild.com.au websites.

For all our present and prospective members, we hope to see you at our get togethers that happen on the third Saturday of each month between 2:00 and 4:00pm (with afternoon tea provided afterwards). When not on a field trip, we normally meet at the ENVIROMART Shop on the corner of Scott St. and Aumuller St. on the Southern side of the Cairns CBD

Our next meeting will be on Saturday 16th May, at ENVIROMART. This meeting, we will take a look at our trips for the second half of the year and maybe watch another DVD. This one will be the Phil McDonough lecture on effective design, given at a ‘Bioneers’ conference a couple of years back. It gives a great way of re-thinking just what effective design is and his ideas can be applied at all levels.

See you all there
