Cairns newsletter for June

Greetings one and all,
Another month gone, my how the time does fly. To celebrate World Environment Day, the ATA was invited to set up a display at a BE GREEN DAY function put on by QANTAS ( Cairns) for all their local staff. It was a great initiative and all who attended had a great BBQ and roam around the various tents.. It was interesting to see the innovations being taken by the ‘Flying Kangaroo’. Biodiesel made from their waste catering oil and used to fuel several QANTAS trucks, reducing power consumption in the various sections and an initiative to replace ‘Dry’ Ice with bio-degradable freezer packs were just some of the ideas being trialled. Its great to see such a large company putting so much thought into reducing their carbon Footprint.

For the last meeting, I advertised that we would be discussing the trips and events for the next 6 months. I had had some feedback earlier that people were keen to change some of the ways we have been doing things and had ideas for future events. This was to be the forum to make those changes, however, only a few people could make it, so we were unable to gain any new insight into what people wanted. Those of us that could attend, discussed possible options, and concluded that we, as a group, liked the way things were progressing. That is, the monthly get togethers, interspersed by irregular field trips{ Ians’ Aquaponics were very inspiring and interesting} and home visits. However, we are still very open to suggestions. If you are not particularly happy with these arrangements, then we need to know how we can improve the group. If you can make it to a meeting and support it giving us your opinions, it’s all good. It does take time and effort from all of us to attend the various functions, but it’s people like us who are making differences, however small, in the way we treat our environment. Having people support our group helps maintain the enthusiasm and keeps topics interesting and informative. You don’t have to have a science degree, just show up share some ideas and participate in some really interesting conversations. Afternoon tea is supplied and seeing a few extra smiling faces at the next meeting would be terrific.

For all our present and prospective members, we hope to see you at our get togethers that happen on the third Saturday of each month between 2:00 and 4:00pm When not on a field trip, we normally meet at the ENVIROMART Shop on the corner of Scott St. and Aumuller St. on the Southern side of the Cairns CBD

Our next meeting on Saturday the 20th June will be a display at the Green Living Expo at the TAFE College in Cairns. The event is free and runs from 8:00am to 2:00pm. I will be there from 7:00am and would be very grateful of some help to set up the display. If you are able to help out in any way, including packing up after, please contact me with your details and times you are able to help out by next Saturday, the 13th June. I will then make up a roster and get it out to you as soon as possible. It will be a great day and always a lot of fun.

Hope to see you there
