November 2009 meeting “LED Lighting and Energy Efficient Appliances”

This meeting was held at 5:45pm on Wednesday Nov 18th at the offices of URS, level 6 no 1 Southbank boulevard, Southbank (Click here for a map)

The Topic:

LED Lighting and Energy Efficient Appliances
Convenor: Michelle Zhuravlyova / Jim Lambert

The efficient use of everyday electrical items is a consideration for anybody looking to reduce their energy usage around the house. The two complementary discussion topics of this evening were the use of LED lighting (light emitting diodes) and Energy Efficient Appliances. To speak on these topics we had two guests to share with us their expertise in the relevant areas.

Ian McNicol, from Sustainability Victoria, discussed Appliance Energy Efficiency. This included discussing the familiar energy rating labels, recent and upcoming changes, mandatory standards, regulation and how to use the rating system to get the best options for your home/business.

Ray Milidoni, from Long Life Lighting, introduced the topic of LEDs with a brief history, then looked at the current state of development of this technology. Ray updated us on the latest LED options now available and their applications. The future of LEDs was discussed. A working display of LEDs was available for a hands on look at some different options.

A brief outline of a fluorescent tube replacement case study from Peter Seligman was presented. The full document is available from the link below.

There was some lively discussion, and the issues that emerged were of both practical and at times complex – for general appliance efficiency issues and LED lighting in particular.
