September 2009 meeting “Batteries”

This meeting was be held at 5:45pm on Wednesday Sep 16th at the offices of URS, level 6 no 1 Southbank boulevard, Southbank (Click here for a map)

The meeting started with a very short AGM and elections for the new committee and was followed by 3 speakers for the evening. This was the last meeting as branch chairman for Michael Jacombs, after 2 1/2 very successful and exciting years, and he leaves a healthy and enthusiastic new committee in place for the future.

Convenor: Michael JacombsThis was a terrific meeting with a wide range of battery topics covered, and handled with knowledge and flair by the speakers.

The speakers were:

Robert Brown
Robert gave a brief history of batteries and described the varieties of batteries available with particular reference to their application in an electric vehicle.

Mick Harris
Gave some practical experience on the care and maintenance of batteries mainly from a RAPS standpoint (Remote Area Power Systems).

Chris Phyland
Gave some research information on
1. Energy storage systems for the electricity grid to smooth the power fluctuations caused by wind farms
2. Some details on the CSIRO Ultrabattery
3. How a Vehicle to grid (V2G) system works
4. General battery issues

This was followed by our usual talk time where people were able to follow up on the topic and just chat about things over a coffee.
