April 2010 Meeting “Greening your Garden with Stormwater”
This meeting was held at 5:45pm on Wednesday April 21st at the offices of URS, level 6 no 1 Southbank boulevard, Southbank (Click here for a map)
Topic: Greening your Garden with Stormwater
Convener: Jessica Davison
Speakers: Madeline Laurenson (raingarden expert) and Vaughn Greenhill (stormwater harvesting practitioner)
Did you know that it takes only 1ml of rain on an hard surface to create stormwater? Did you know that when forests are cleared and replaced with cities, between 40 to 60% of surfaces become impervious (roofs, roads, footpaths etc). Did you know that in Melbourne, about 450GL of stormwater flows into drains, rivers and bays and that this is almost the same amount of potable water that is supplied to Melbourne each year? Did you know that there are a number of ways to catch stormwater on your property to help keep your garden green, our waterways and bays cleaner and the urban environment cooler?
These speakers showed us the wonders of stormwater as they discussed how to capture, clean and use stormwater from a range of sources and for a multitude of uses.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative evening, and gave a wonderful insight into the ways stormwater could be used in gorgeous and practical garden settings. There was lots of lively discussion during and after the presentations
