July 2008 Meeting – “What the ATA is all about” and “The International Projects”

This meeting consisted of two topics
- What the ATA is all about by Bruce Campbell
- The International Projects by Anton Vikstrom
and a special report on
- The World Hydrogen Energy Conference by Peter K Campbell

What the ATA is all About

Bruce Campbell, who joined the ATA early this year as CEO, gave a presentation on how, after 6 months at the helm, he sees the ATA, what initiatives they are undertaking and where they are hoping to go. This gave us all a great opportunity to hear this and also a great opportunity to give him feedback on our views.

Several interesting points came out of the meeting
1. The role of the ATA in advocacy is considered very high by members
2. The definition of the ATA’s target audience and an understanding of what sustainabilty means to us as an organisation need looking at
3. Linkages of smaller groups with the ATA would give us all a better ability to be seen as an organisation to be taken notice of
4. Is the name of the ATA an impediment in projecting our real intent? eg Should our name include the words Sustainable Technology?

The ATA International Projects

Anton Vikstrom, the ATA International Projects Manager, despite being frustrated by the failure of technology (the projecting system failed), gave an excellent overview of how the Project Group came about, what they have done to date in East Timor (installing solar panels etc), what problems they have had, how they have managed the process and where they are looking at expanding to.
Anton then invited members to contact him about becoming involved (NB No free trips!!)

The World Hydrogen Energy Conference

Peter K Campbell, who is an ATA member, presented a paper at the WHEC and gave us a brief overview of the conference. The paper that he presented was based on battery technology. Interestingly he rather bravely concluded his paper by saying (in effect) “Hydrogen for transport – it won’t work – electric is the way to go”. Just goes to show what our members are made of!!

When the meeting had finished there was the usual dive for the speakers to follow up on many of the points raised. Once again a very energised and rewarding meeting.
