Lance,
Could we have a rule that one can only post after being a member for at least for 4 weeks.
Or would it be possible to only allow ATA members to post?
These one day spams are just getting too much.

It would be effective if non ATA members were somehow prevented from posting links.
Why not a spam alert button on each thread, that way its easier for lance or someone to cleanup. A 4 week rule will simply make potential members move on. Maybe theres some way in which the members can self-manage threads ie whoever creates a thread can delete posts with links? Just an idea.
or maybe you have a more rigorous application process to join ?
so, say, you write a personal reason for joining ,then post that ,then it is seconded by existing members ? or is that all too hard ?
I agree with Jeffbloggs, a spam alert button is the most effective and allows the moderator to promptly delete the post and block the spammer if it is just first time rubbish.
Given the consistent layouts of many of these recent spams, I suspect they come from a single origin. They also follow a consistent pattern of being a new thread for a new online member.
I tend to support dave lawrence's suggestion, or alternately something like it: perhaps all FIRST posts can be moderated by the key master. I don't think that means much more interference or oversight than is required now.
When I joined the forum not so long ago, I was amazed my post was immediately visible (and editable, to boot). I don't think other new members would be particularly disappointed if there was a delay for posts, even till the next working day.
By the way - can someone fix the spelling on that screen prompt to "Tags (comma separated)"?
The problem is that we don't have the time to keep checking the forums and deleting the spam, it's such a time waster, so we are looking at implementing captcha or a similar system, as well as blocking the IP addresses (or range of addresses) of the spamming scumbags. Yes, they can use a proxy to bypass IP blocks, but it makes it not worthwhile for them to try and bypass captcha as well.
Unfortunately, spammers are a fact of life, there's always a small percentage of the population who are unethical morons. We actually get very few spam compared to many other forums...
It is a lot quicker for Lance to delete these scum bags if no one responds to any of the Spams. Just let them sit there friendless with a 1 next to their I.D. Going by their topics, it seems like most of them are overweight and drive old bombs or trucks!
So, your not interested in Candida breakfast recepies?.
Is this forum big enough to have a part-time forum moderator to stop these scum from destroying this great community?
Actually, we (well, actually just me for the moment) are toying with the idea of making some of the regular posters here moderators, but would need an undertaking by those willing to do it to make sure only pure spam is deleted, and if unsure, to contact us first...
Lance
I think thats acceptable, so long you leave a path to directly access yourself as "managing moderator" (possibly via a dedicated thread/subject) for those times some posts/threads are unintentionally/intentionally deleted by regular "moderating members"...;)
I think self-regulation, with central oversight, is an ideal way to manage forums like these.
You must log in to post.
