I am trying to make my home more efficient by minimising heat losses through winter. We've put up thick curtains, sealed gaps around doors and close off rooms that do not need to be heated. We've also insulated the ceiling. I'd like to improve the thermal performance further and wonder whether the many vents on the internal walls can't be closed of partially closed to reduce the amount of warm air that escapes. The house is double brick with a carpet covered wooden floor. It seems like such a waste that the warmest air in most rooms is shown a quick and easy way outside.
I understand that the vents have a purpose but wonder if the number in our house isn't a bit higher than it needs to be given that we do not use the original oil heater or the unflued gas heater that was in use in the house previously.
What are forum members thoughts on these vents? Can I block (all or some) of them off through winter?
