Insulated plasterboard Thesis Idea - Feedback Needed Urgently

I did a project on insulated plasterboard, we never did any testing but it seems like a good idea so I will throw it out there. We constructed a 20mm insulated plasterboard using standard plasterboard 8mm, 12mm cork and foil, which gave a theoretical R-value high enough to be classified as government rebatable in 2008. Anyways due to non testing we are unsure of its actual R-value. It was slightly heavy due to the combination of cork and plasterboard but it was quite solid.

I am also wondering on peoples thoughts about this product, whether it is a good concept cause I am contemplating doing a thesis on it next year and actually doing some testing.

Cork would be different. It would add more thermal mass to the board as well as insulation. It would behave differently to foam and plasterboard.

If you are looking for useful research areas in energy efficient housing there are many possibilities.

As a former plasterer I can see a few hurdles for your idea.

Pasterers who fix on a sqm rate need to be able to cut and put board up quickly. This normally means cutting with a Stanley knife and not using a saw to cut through board. The reason plasterboard is used these days is because of the speed in which it can be applied. I would hazard a guess and suggest that your product would take on average 10 times longer to fix then normal Gyprock and therefore blowing out the budget of most builders/owners. However, I think you may find a niche market for this but dont know how the r value of this product would be better than than 13mm sound check or 16mm fire check plasterboard with R1.5 insulation.

Next year I am planning to ripp out all my external walls' internal facings ( currently faced with masonite) to install insulation.

I will be doing the task myself. I've done a plasterboarding course and know that it is going to be a slow process for me no matter what.

If the product took longer to cut BUT
- had a good insulation value
- was comparable in difficulty with normal plasterboard to install
- was competitively priced

then I would certainly be open to considering it. For retrofitting purposes if you are doing it yourself then time is less important than $ cost to purchase ( well it is for me anyway ). If it did away with having to faff around with batts/concertina foil in the spaces between the studs then this would also be a positive. Having an older house I won't know until I open up the walls how thick the studs are so not having to try and install stuff with air gaps would be a real positive from my perspective.

If you go ahead with the project and find that you are looking for a guinea pig house in Melbourne then post on this thread and we can sort something out.

solar brisbane - I thought Soundcheck was 18mm, with standard plasterboard gyprock at 12mm?

Schutte - why the cork? Does it combine with the other components to produce a sum greater than the individual elements? Cork is usually considered recyclable (it is at least renewable), but I think glueing it to plasterboard would tend to prevent that in practice. What R value would you be aiming for? Presumably you would need to exceed the performance of Kingspan per mm of total thickness, to justify the extra element. Finally, if such a project produced a sufficiently high insulation level, are there enough cork oaks in cultivation to supply the raw material (though there will be some excess capacity in the transfer of bottle closures to screw tops)?

Why not insulate between the stud work. Foil won't work without the shiny side facing an air gap.
