There are thousands of panels coming in to Australia under the 'guise' of genuine produce. This has always been a problem in Europe, there are many fake branded panels across the continent. The problem in Australia is somewhat different. Smaller non certified factories are making backroom agreements with larger manufacturers to sell under their license. This allows lower grade panels to come into the country with labels from CEC approved factories. Whilst the effect of this may not be immediate there is a real danger when it comes time to call in a warranty we will find the original factory will either not exist or not fulfill as their name is not the one on the panel. The named factory will claim it is not their authentic product and suddenly there is a major issue.
The most disturbing part of this is that there are several importers who are aware of this. Whilst they are looking at the short term dollar, the real cost will be much more significant.
Whilst we cannot change the behaviour of the manufacturers what we can do is promote a level of vigilance among installers and end users. I have already spoken with CEC about taking steps to ensure we counter this practice but with all government based orgs they are tentative about leaping into advanced forms of accreditation. After all, it won't be cheap.
A couple of guidelines:
1. If its priced too good to be true, it probably is.
2. If buying wholesale request the history of the panels, Flash & B/L.
If they can't provide it then look elsewhere.
3. If you are importing always make sure the name on the IEC/TUV/CEC is the same name of the account you are sending your money to. Stories of sister companies and holding companies are all the rage for the cowboys.
4. Ask about the warranty liability, its one thing for a company to say they will fulfill it but check if they have insurance from a recognised global insurer. e.g. Chubb. If they have backing from a Chinese bank/insurer its your own risk.
5. Look beyond the specs. Just because a panel sells well doesn't mean it is the best value for money. Do your research.
I'd appreciate any ideas or comments on this. The industry is tough enough without this coming back to bite hundreds of companies on the ass....and it will.
