I'm new to this forum, and I've just bought a 2kw Amorphis system from Solarshop Australia (should be installed around September sometime). I figure we need a bigger system than that to fully cover our electricity usage (it's a big house with lots of people living in it), but the cost is just so high. Can anyone recommend a DIY alternative?

The Federal Govt is offering $a 1600 rebate plus RECS for installing solar and heat pump hot water systems if you have an existing electric hot water system. I would recommend a large evacuated tube system.
A cheaper way to save electricity costs is to reduce the amount of standby power being used in the house. Around 10% of your power bill is due to standby power.
Buy some standby power saver power boards from Bunnings for $20, ideal for TV, DVD, VCR, STB, HiFi..
For computers I have installed powerboards with a footswitch for around $27 from Bunnings. Stops standby power for your PC, printer, modem , router etc.
Another way to maximise your feed-in tariff with a 2kW solar system is to run your dishwasher, washing machine etc at night.

The best way to complement your investment is to educate your household members and only buy energy efficient appliances. Use gas for cooking and solar hot water. For every dollar you spend on energy efficiency you save $5-10 on energy generation costs. You probably already know this.
Congratulations on your purchase of a solar power system. I have a 1kW system and purchase green power to make up the balance of use. Every day is a "chooseday". By making the right choices we can all make a difference.
