   I'm moving into a concrete house by the end of the year. With the 2 front rooms facing west; I NEED to insulate the whole house.

   Suggestions are sought on:

   Types of materials I could use
   Application of same
   Any other contributions about moving into a 'Concrete Special'!
   (references to Sanity will be ignored:))

   I would guess that whatever is used, it will be applied to the exterior of the building. I can't plant trees to shade the house as I'm installing a 2kw Solar photovoltaic system and they have to go where the trees would shade them for too much of the day.

   Chris has a case study in Autumn 2008 Sustainability News (Darebin City Council's quarterly newsletter) about how he is turning his Housing Commission House into a Sustainable Home see http://www.darebin.vic.gov.au/sustainabilitynews and select Autumn 2008. One of the things he is doing is building beyond the current walls to put the thermal mass of the concrete inside.

   Supertherm on the roof and walls will reduce the internal temperature of the house by around 15-20 degrees in hot weather. It also reduces heat loss in winter dramatically.

   I would believe your best option would be to create a trombe wall. For those not sure what it can do,

   So building a false external wall, may not be the cheapest but it will certainly give you the greatest effectiveness.
