The previous thread 'double glazed windows' from a couple of months ago was filled with lots of stuff from lots of us - it's about a quarter of the way down page 3 on the 'general' forum topics list.
Key points:
It depends what your existing windows are, it depends how good you want them to become.
Some are easily upgraded, some are impossible to do anything with because of tiny frame sections that won't even except good single glass.
If your existing windows are timber framed, and the movable sashes are thick enough, they can be easily upgraded either by installing commercial IGUs or by adding 'secondary glazing' to suit.
Fixed timber windows are easy to do either way.
I've done a triple glazed prototype here in my office, and there's photos and notes on my Sunergy Design facebook page. It was easy and wasn't expensive. Please feel free to copy or improve.
For other frame materials it really depends on the actual frame section your existing windows have.
