ATA at the Victorian Climate Change Summit

On Friday April 4th I represented the Alternative Technology Association at the Victorian Climate Change Summit. The summit was hosed by Victorian Premier John Brumby and eight of his ministers. It was attended by just over 100 invited representatives of the community including business, industry, farming and the regions.

The commitment of the Victorian Government to understanding the implications of climate change was very positive. A clear message was delivered to the government that there is an urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions now and that the 60% target by 2050 is not enough, it needs to be 80 to 90%. The summit produced a paper that will lead to a green paper and white paper in the future. There were also some initiatives announced including additional funding for large scale renewable energy projects. I hope there will be a positive announcement soon about a Victorian Feed in Tariff.

More details on the summit can be obtained from www.climatechange.vic.gov.au/summit/index.htm There is the opportunity to comment on the forum paper and contribute to the policy development.
