Photograph the future: ATA’s sustainable living photo gallery
On 24 Ocotober 2009, the ATA lunched the Real People Living Sustainable Lives photo gallery as part of the International Day of Climate Action .
Hundreds of ATA’s members, across Australia and New Zealand, contibuted photos to the gallery, joining the call for the world’s political leaders to create an equitable global climate treaty at the United Nations Climate Change meeting in Copenhagen this December.
The global call to action was intiated by 350.org, an international campaign dedicated to lowering carbon dioxide below 350 parts per million. 350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide, measured in parts per million (ppm), in our atmosphere. We are now past 390 ppm.

Ian Porter, ATA’s CEO, says it’s a revelation to see how Australians are responding to the challenge of climate change.
“There are photos of people on their roofs with solar systems, a plethora of energy-efficient house designs and many have invented new approaches to water use and conservation. This is an exhibition of people who are leading the way in achieving sustainability in their communities.”
“The exhibition has been so popular that we expect it will become a living gallery where people can add their images well after October 24, and continue to inspire others to follow their lead”
Mr Poter says ATA took part in 350.org because it helps focus the action of individuals, neighborhoods and communities in making change.
“A target of 350 ppm is where we need to start. It provides a tangible target, a call to action and a policy focus, but we should never lose sight of the fact that pre-industrial concentrations of CO2 were never above 300 ppm.”
