The Topic will be – The International Model Solar Vehicle Challenge
Guest Speakers: Paul Wellington and Ian Gardner
Paul Wellington was one of the instigators of the Model Solar Vehicle Challenge to provide school students with similar motivation and learning about solar energy and efficient vehicle design to students involved in the first World Solar Challenge in 1987. He will focus on the event structure and organization.
Ian Gardner mentors a number of schools including Box Hill High and Syndal South Primary, regular finalists in Victoria. He is the technical expert on the Victorian and national committees, having compiled substantial data on solar cells, motors, etc and will discuss diverse aspects of the mechanical, electrical and electronic systems used in the top cars.
As Colin Frost from Engineers Australia put it “the Solar Model Challenge is great way for young people to be innovative about alternative ways to generate energy. By exposing young people to this kind of challenge, they will be encouraged to develop a more sustainable approach to energy use”. Paul and Ian will talk about the project, show (& we hope) demonstrate some of the models.
NOTE The next Victorian Model Solar Vehicle Challenge will be held on 16th & 17th October, 2010, Science Works, Melbourne, VIC with the National finals being held at Esplanade Reserve, Fremantle, WA on November 27th and 28th.
