Mike and his partner Lorna Pitt developed the Westwyck eco-village from the former West Brunswick Primary School, demonstrating what was possible in urban development. Westwyck became a model for sustainable design and hosted numerous tours over the years.
Donna Luckman, the ATA’s chief executive, described Mike Hill as a sustainability leader and mentor to many people over decades.
“Many ATA members would have learnt a great deal by visiting or reading about the Westwyck development,” Ms Luckman said. “He was generous of spirit and in sharing his energy and knowledge. He will be greatly missed, and our condolences go out to Lorna and Mike’s family.”
Kulja Coulston, editor of Sanctuary Magazine, said Mike was passionate not just for sustainable design but for how a community could be galvanised to live well together.
“He never seemed to tire of showing people through his home at Westwyck, and hundreds of people have been inspired by his ideas and energy over the years.”
