It has become increasingly evident that real innovation is taking place in Victorian rural and regional communities to improve energy and water supplies. The drivers for these projects are various; some address issues of access, reliability or affordability while others are focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reduced availability of water due to climate change or other environmental concerns. Broad awareness of these initiatives outside their own communities is quite limited however, and there is little understanding amongst decision-makers of them, or the best way to remove regulatory and policy impediments to their development and replication elsewhere.
The Community-Based Water and Energy Initiatives report profiles 10 case studies of innovative community based energy and water initiatives undertaken in rural and regional Victoria. The report aims to guide and inspire rural communities, under threat from climate change, to develop community-based projects that tackle water scarcity and rising energy costs.
